Puig Ciutat: a multifunctional room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">This point was excavated to identify one of the rooms that had been best located in the geophysical surveys and that seemed to have been burned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">We also wanted to check for the presence of a street crossing the camp from north to south, providing access from one of the gates in the city wall to the interior of the settlement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1567 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.puigciutat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/14_P3_eng_01.jpg\" alt=\"14_P3_eng_01\" width=\"489\" height=\"370\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>How was it built?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The room was built with walls of rammed earth on a socle of stone bound with mud, like the rest of the buildings from the Roman Republican Period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The roof, supported on oak beams, was made with twigs and waterproofed with clay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The room borders on the street to the west and has an opening on the southern side. The fact that the door opens to the south indicates that this room is part of a complex building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1570 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.puigciutat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/17_P3_eng_02-1040x388.jpg\" alt=\"17_P3_eng_02\" width=\"1040\" height=\"388\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>What was its purpose?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The material recovered doesn\u2019t indicate a specific use for the room, as there were work tools (a saw, a pair of loom weights, etc.) as well as ceramic recipients for domestic use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Two amphorae have been located, one from the south of the Iberian Peninsula and the other from the Italian Peninsula, which speak for the transport of oil, wine or salted products (preserved fish).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">One outstanding set consists of a <i>krater<\/i>, a recipient used for mixing water and wine, and several little drinking glasses. The <i>krater<\/i> was from Sicily and the glasses from modern-day Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">An Iberian ceramic playing counter was also recovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.puigciutat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20_P3_eng_03-1040x222.jpg\" alt=\"20_P3_eng_03\" width=\"1040\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>What happened to it?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The room was destroyed during the battle that brought an end to the life of the settlement in the mid-1st century. The evidence recovered at this point is:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Burnt ceiling beams. They must have been moved around to retrieve material once the battle was over.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Projectiles (sling-bullets, catapult-bolts and javelin tips) above the ruins. These could only have been fired from the exterior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Ceramics crushed in situ.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Front part of a dog trapped under the ruins.
